The Duchess of Cambridge attended the 2017 Gala Dinner for The Anna Freud National Centre for Children and Families (AFNCCF). The gala dinner was held in The Orangery at Kensington Palace to celebrate the new £39 million Centre of Excellence under construction on Rodney Street in Islington.

AFNCCF is a mental health charity whose aim is to transform current mental health provision in the U.K. by providing the quality, accessibility, and effectiveness of treatment. They believe that every child and their family should be at the heart of the care they receive, working in partnership with professionals.

The Centre of Excellence will bring under one roof the very best science, education and mental health support for families. By 2020 depression will be the leading cause of death and disability in industrialized countries. Currently, 50% of adult mental health problems begin in childhood.

A new Centre of Excellence will provide physical space for scientists with an interest in mental health; integrate mental health, education, social care, and scientific research; facilitate the development of a national multimedia science communication strategy; provide an environment for the delivery of a portfolio of postgraduate programmes dealing with mental health; and much more.

The Duchess of Cambridge, who is Patron of the AFNCCF, supported a nationwide campaign to promote mental wellbeing in primary schools last September
She said: "As parents, we all want our children to have the best possible start in life. Encouraging children to understand and be open about their feelings can give them the skills to cope with the ups and downs that life will throw at them as they grow up. It's important that our children understand that emotions are normal and that they have the confidence to ask for help if they are struggling."

The gala was compered by British BBC journalist Kate Silvertone. According to her, "what we experience when we are young goes a long way to influencing the adult we become. Children's mental health is one of the most important issues for society today and finding solutions to achieving balance and wellbeing as adults have to start with understanding the importance of our early years."
