Today Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip celebrate their 70th wedding anniversary. To mark the occasion I wrote down 5+1 things you absolutely must know about them:
1. THE VERY FIRST TIME THEY MET
Elizabeth met her future husband in November 1934, when she was 8 years old and he was 13. The occasion was the wedding of Prince George, Duke of Kent (her uncle) and Princess Marina of Greece and Denmark (his cousin). Elizabeth was one of the bridesmaids.

2. WHEN THEY FELL IN LOVE
In the sping of 1939, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth along with their young daughters Elizabeth and Margaret toured the Royal Naval College in Dartmouth. A young Prince Philip was asked to escort the two princesses during the day. Elizabeth immediately fell in love with him and they began to exchange letters until the summer of 1946, when he asked the King for her hand in marriage.

3. THAT PORTRAIT IN HER ROOM
After Philip spent Christmas with the royal family at Windsor Castle in 1943, Elizabeth kept a picture of him in her room. She later replaced it with another one of him with a long beard to placate any gossip about their relationship.

4. SHE TECHNICALLY DIDN'T MARRY A PRINCE
Philip was born Prince of Greece and Denmark. However, before the marriage, he renounced his Greek and Danish titles and adopted his mother's surname. So, Princess Elizabeth, the future Queen of the United Kingdom, simply married Lieutenant Philip Mountbatten.

5. A NICKNAME FOR A QUEEN
Prince Philip has a very sweet and unusual nickname for his wife: 'cabbage'. It could come from the French term of affection 'mon petit chou', which could be literally be translated into 'my little cabbage'. He sometimes calls her 'sausage' as well.

6. MARRIED FOR A LIFE
They have been married for 70 years. Elizabeth is the longest-reigning British Monarch and Philip is the longest-serving consort of a reigning British Monarch. On their golden wedding anniversary in 1997, she said: "He has, quite simply, been my strength and stay all these years."
